What Is a Blue Bar Bearded Dragon?

Blue Bar Bearded Dragons are recognised by cool-toned bars or patches visible along the sides of the body.

The markings may appear slate blue, smoky blue-grey, lavender-grey, purple-grey or steel coloured depending on the individual, lighting, temperature and surrounding pigmentation.

Blue Bar does not mean that the entire dragon is blue.

The defining colour is usually concentrated in lateral markings along the shoulders, ribs, flanks or sides of the body. These bars frequently contrast against a warmer yellow, orange, red, tan or brown base.

The trait is commonly encountered in combination with selected colour and pattern lines.

Examples include Citrus Blue Bar, Red Blue Bar, Orange Blue Bar, Tiger Blue Bar and Rainbow Blue Bar.

Blue Bar is not currently established as one simple dominant or recessive mutation.

It is safest to treat it as a selectively developed polygenic colour and pattern characteristic supported by visible expression and lineage.

There is no recognised Het Blue Bar category.

An animal without visible blue bars should not be labelled a hidden Blue Bar carrier in the same way that a visually Normal dragon may be confirmed Het Hypo or Het Translucent.

Blue Bar expression exists across a range.

Head, Eyes and Facial Colour

The head of a Blue Bar Bearded Dragon retains the broad triangular shape typical of Pogona vitticeps.

Blue Bar expression is usually strongest along the sides of the body rather than on the face. However, cool grey, lavender or blue-grey pigmentation may occasionally appear around the cheeks, jaw, beard or sides of the head.

The facial scales retain their standard structure unless the dragon also expresses another scale morph.

Caring for a Blue Bar Bearded Dragon

Blue Bar Bearded Dragons require the same fundamental husbandry as other healthy Pogona vitticeps.

Blue-grey lateral markings do not create separate UVB, heating, humidity, dietary or enclosure requirements. Care should be based on the dragon’s species, age, size, health and individual condition rather than the intensity of its colour.

The enclosure must provide sufficient usable space for movement, climbing, basking, hiding and behavioural thermoregulation.

A bright basking zone should be positioned at one end, with progressively cooler and more shaded conditions available elsewhere.

A suitable linear UVB lamp is essential.

UVB exposure supports vitamin D3 production, calcium metabolism, skeletal health and muscular function. The UVB source should overlap appropriately with the basking area while allowing the dragon to retreat into shade and areas of lower exposure.

Temperatures should be measured with reliable equipment rather than estimated by touch.

Diet must be appropriate for the dragon’s age and condition.

Growing juveniles generally require more frequent access to appropriately sized live invertebrates. Healthy adults usually consume a greater proportion of varied leafy greens and safe vegetables.

Feeder insects should be properly sized, well gut-loaded and supplemented according to an appropriate calcium and vitamin schedule.

Diet cannot create an inherited Blue Bar trait.

Good nutrition supports normal growth, skin health and pigmentation, but blue-grey lateral bars are primarily influenced by the dragon’s genetic background and development.

The term Het Blue Bar should not be used.

A visually modest animal may have Blue Bar ancestry and may contribute cool-colour potential, but it is not proven heterozygous for one identified allele.
